Belonging to the quartz family, Amethyst is said to be the stone of contentment, bestowing stability, serenity and peace. Amethyst can vary in colour, due to the traces of iron it contains. Prized for its calming effect, the name derives from the Greek amethustos, meaning 'non-inebriated'; it is often used as a meditation stone to help quieten the mind and as an aid to finding inner peace.
Amethyst is the birthstone for February and is given to mark a 6th Wedding Anniversary.
