The name turquoise derives from the French, pierre turquoise , meaning 'Turkish stone', from when European crusaders first came across the stone in medieval times. Valued as a protection against evil spirits in many cultures, turquoise was worn as an amulet for strength and prosperity. It is particularly valued in the Native American community and often combined with silver in beautiful jewellery. If you like turquoise, you may also like howlite jewellery.
Turquoise is the birthstone for December, and the gemstone often given to mark a 11th wedding anniversary.
